THE SOCIETY OF THE BLIND

DANIELA- We share your concern about the destiny of the motherland, Dr. Fletcher, and would like to take part in it's salvation within the limits of our modest possibilities, but our ignorance hinders us. Help us to destroy it. The famous syndrome "Motherland's in danger" which bears your name - what's the point of it?

Fletcher traverses the room and stops, focusing his eyes on Daniela.

FLETCHER.- How should I explain this to you... Tell me, are you married?
    DANIELA- No.
FLETCHER.- Have you got a boyfriend?
    DANIELA- Actually, no.
FLETCHER.- Have an eye on someone?
DANIELA- What makes you think so?
FLETCHER.- That's it!.. A charming young woman and - alone! Can you consider this a normal thing? Everything which runs counter the natural course of things is socially dangerous, gentlemen, it undermines the foundations of the nation and finally it can destroy it. The process is taking place in full view of everyone, it's persistent and omnipresent, but no one cares to think of where it can lead us to.
    DANIELA- Except us.
FLETCHER.- And you all the more so!
CAROLINA.- If we got you right, Doctor, only one thing can be opposed to this pernicious destruction: everyone by his own free will, without any compulsion or forcing, has to follow his natural inclinations. An enterprising man's got to make money. A government's got to support him by all means. A politician's got to be in parliament. A thief's got to steal. A whore's got serve her clients. A woman worthy in every respect got to prosper in the field of family happiness...
BOB,- And what have we got in reality? A whore gets family happiness. A woman worthy in every respect goes walking the streets. An enterprising man steals. A thief sits in the parliament. A politician makes money. And the government supports them all by all means. It only remains for us to find out which of the above can be considered natural.
